Outreach

Below are some projects that Let's Talk It Ovar has been involved in over the years:

  • Some of our survivors are very involved in qulting. We have three completed quilts and are working on our 4th quilt. When one is completed, it is donated to an area hospital. To date our quilts are displayed at Toledo Hospital and The University of Toledo Medical Center. Our 3rd quilt will be donated to St. Vincent Medical Center. If you are interested in helping us with our quilt, please contact Stella Schwan at 419-276-4203 or email Stella at sschwan1930@hotmail.com

  • Let's Talk It Ovar has been involved in decorating a Christmas tree in the Manor House in Wildwood Metropark. This was a wonderful way to raise awareness about Ovarian Cancer as approximately 15,000 people tour the Manor House each year during this week long event.

  • We have also participated in benefits for Ovarian Cancer survivors, the most current of which occurred on December 3, 2008 at Springfield High School for Allison B., a 34 yr. old Ovarian Cancer Survivor.

  • Two of our members, Phyllis G. and Gayle R. have been guest speakers for the past two years at the University of Toledo Medical Center before first year medical students. Phyllis encourages the medical students to understand Ovarian Cancer and its effects on a woman and her family. Gayle's emphasis has been on genetic testing and the personal effect of such testing.

  • Let's Talk It Ovar also provides newly diagnosed Ovarian Cancer patients with our Survivor Bags. Survivor Bags are filled with educational materials such as Understanding Ovarian Cancer, Treatment Guidelines and Eating Hints to Make the Journey Easier as well as information about Let's Talk It Ovar. Other items in the bags may consist of moisturizer, shampoo, and other items of a personal nature. Once filled, these bags are delivered to local GYN/Oncologists whose staff distributes them to newly diagnosed Ovarian Cancer patients.

  • Some of our suvivors have attended Camp Mak-A-Dream in Gold Creek, Montana. Camp Mak-A-Dream is an Ovarian Cancer camp which fosters comraderie among survivors from across the country. It is a week filled with learning and fun. It is one of the most wonderful group of women, all coming togethr for the same reason, to help each other in this fight to survive. A lasting bond is formed with women from across the country that continues long after camp.

  • In 2008 Let's Talk It Ovar supported Hospice of Northwest Ohio by purchasing a brick for their outdoor walkway.

  • Let's Talk It Ovar has also been present at numerous festivals and health fairs throughout the Northwest Ohio area distributing educational material and raising awareness about Ovarian Cancer
