Facts About Ovarian Cancer

  1. There are more than 20,000 newly diagnosed cases of Ovarian Cancer each year.
  2. Ovarian Cancer is the leading cause of death among gynecologic cancers.
  3. Less than 20% of cases are diagnosed early.
  4. When diagnosed early, the survival rate is over 90%.
  5. The overall 5-year survival rate is 45%.
  6. The overall 10-year survival rate is 38%.
  7. A Pap Test is NOT a diagnostic test for Ovarian Cancer. A Pap Test IS a diagnostic test for Cervical Cancer.
  8. Birth control pills can lower the risk of Ovarian Cancer by as much as 50%.
  9. Genetics/Heredity (family history) only accounts for about 10% of Ovarian Cancer cases annually.
